I think you’d be pretty hard pressed to find someone that hasn’t heard “Down Under” by Men at Work. I believe that song is credited with introducing the world to Vegemite. Anyway, this story about the song is ridiculous. Apparently part of the song is a bit similar to a song that was written in 1935 called “Kookaburra.” In 1990, music company Larrikin bought the rights to “Kookaburra.” Now, 20 years later, Larrikin is suing Men at Work(and at this point has won). Men at Work’s Colin Hay had this to say about it:
“Mr Lurie [Larrikin] claims to care only about protecting the copyright of Marion Sinclair, who sadly has passed away. I don’t believe him. It may well be noted, that Marion Sinclair herself never made any claim that we had appropriated any part of her song Kookaburra, and she wrote it, and was most definitely alive, when Men At Work’s version of Down Under was a big hit. Apparently she didn’t notice either.
