Kiss and Tell
Macy's released the custom-published Kiss & Tell book in 2006 in partnership with Chronicle Books and editor Cabell Harris, featuring kissing confessions, lip prints, and signatures from 50 prominent celebrities, like Jessica Alba, Pink, Jane Seymour, and fashion mogul Betsey Johnson, alongside a companion celebrity screen print auction for charity.
Macy's hosted a concurrent auction for 20 limited-edition screen prints featuring individual celebrity lip prints and autographs pulled from the book project, with proceeds supporting charitable initiatives like the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign. The campaign utilized the funds to finance life-saving educational programs and medical research aimed at fighting heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among women.
Harris envisioned the book as a unique artistic medium to counter what he felt was a loud, aggressive culture. His goal was to compile intimate, positive human expressions (celebrity "kisses" and personal stories) into a cohesive, stylized tangible collection. True to Harris's reputably meticulous eye for composition and texture, the first-edition hardcover featured an instantly recognizable pink, orange, and brown flocked, velvet-textured design.
Harris curated the content from the 50 prominent women, then worked directly with Chronicle Books and Macy's to translate the project into an upscale retail piece alongside the highly successful charitable screen-print auction. Because the book was sold across Macy's department stores nationwide, the final donation figure continually grew as individual inventory moved off the shelves.
